Big Tech kept growing and spending, and in October investors finally asked who pays for it. Chip stocks fell 15.4 percent and the Nasdaq 5.3 percent, whilst energy, health care and utilities each rose more than 10 percent. Of the major stock indices, only the Dow and the FTSE 100 ended the month higher. The US 10-year yield fell 36bp, its biggest monthly fall since December 2023, and Brent rose 19.3 percent after attacks on tankers near Hormuz and claimed strikes on Saudi oil sites.
US stocks then had a third losing week, and Friday was the worst day: Intel warned it would burn cash and fell 29 percent, its biggest one-day drop on record, and chips lost 7 percent in a session. The big cloud companies split on cash. Microsoft grew Azure 48 percent with positive free cash flow and its shares rose, whilst Alphabet more than doubled its cloud revenue and still fell about 8 percent because it burned USD 9.1 billion. The Fed held 10-2 with two votes to hike, the ECB held, and the UK Budget passed without a gilt scare. This week brings Apple, the US midterms on Tuesday, the Bank of England on Thursday and US payrolls on Friday. The full brief checks last week’s five calls and sets out the desk’s views.
