A hot September CPI (3.7% headline, 2.6% core) should have been the story. Instead the Nasdaq fell 4.5% and the Philadelphia semiconductor index 11.4%, as the AI complex sold off on three things at once: debt-funded neocloud capacity, with CoreWeave’s bonds at new lows; Chinese competition in memory, with SK Hynix down 24% on the week; and a Gartner forecast that most neoclouds will not survive independently to 2030.
Money rotated into defensives, banks and duration. Long yields fell 16–18bp, October Fed-hike odds fell back to roughly one in five, and the FTSE 100 had its best week in six months. The Dow rose 0.7% while the Nasdaq fell 4.5%: that spread is the week. The full brief ranks the eight events of 19–23 October, from UK CPI and Meta and Tesla results to China’s Q3 GDP, and sets out the desk’s three views and what would prove them wrong.
